This week I brought headphones to work; in listening to music I can more easily block out my immediate surroundings to concentrate on my work. I also find myself with one foot in one world and one in another.
So I'm looking forward to a different kind of time and space and environment for more than a couple of brief weekend days.
Edit: Forgot to mention that on Thursday, I'm heading out of town for a few days. Family will be around so it's not a total retreat, but it is a change of pace.

At my workplace, we all have headphones, and iTunes downloaded. Helps us focus when we need to, and we share each other's music on the network.
"a different kind of time and space and environment"
I don't know what kind of job you do, and maybe blocking out your surroundings is practical. I like music as much as anyone; my last blog post has rock lyrics. And I'm certainly not against pleasurable experiences! However, I found that I was often distracting myself or blocking out things as an escape.
Recently I took a semi-retreat and gave up a whole lot of distractions for a couple of weeks. It was a bit of a surprise to find out what my life was like without trying to escape it.
Anyway, not saying you "should" do such a thing. Just chatting, and wanted to say that "a different kind of time and space and environment" is also possible in the other direction from headphones, by really looking at what's around us and really experiencing life.
I like your blog. Enjoy your tunes!
Night sky - I'm an architect. Usually it's best that I'm available to hear and help others (it's an open office arrangement) but the side effect is that I can hear everything. I needed to get some stuff out the door last week, so I went to my little acoustical cave to be super-productive. Such is the back story.
For me it's all about finding balance by way of experimentation.
It's amazing what things are noticed when some are gone - it's nice to be reminded of that, too.
Explosions in the Sky... check it out. (You can find some concert footage on youtube, but the sound balance is different than studio recordings).
Ramble ramble!
Music--the kind you listen to, not the kind you play--has been both in my life, distraction and portal to the divine. Lately it's been more the former; the stereo's been off most of the time. I kind of miss it functioning as the latter, but I haven't had a way back into it. On the other hand, I gave up listening to CDs for Lent one year a while back, and that was an intense experience. So I guess it's just a matter of following the Way, and responding as appropriate. Sometimes silence; sometimes music.
